Blue Horn Initiative convened its inaugural public program on October 2, 2025, at iRise Hub in Mogadishu — a panel discussion examining the role of Somalia’s blue economy in creating sustainable livelihoods and opportunities for young people.
The event, held under the theme “Somalia’s Blue Economy: Jobs, Innovation, and Opportunities for Youth,” brought together students, academics, entrepreneurs, and environmental professionals for a structured dialogue on one of Somalia’s most consequential and underexplored economic and environmental frontiers.
The discussion moved beyond general awareness to address concrete questions: how Somalia’s fisheries sector can be developed in a way that benefits coastal communities and young professionals; what role marine innovation and eco-enterprise can play in national economic development; and how challenges such as plastic pollution and environmental degradation intersect with sustainable growth.
Panelists offered perspectives drawn from direct experience in fisheries, environmental science, and youth entrepreneurship — reflecting Blue Horn Initiative’s commitment to evidence-based dialogue rather than abstract debate.
“Youth are not just beneficiaries of the blue economy,” the session concluded. “They are the drivers of its transformation.“
What the event produced
Beyond the discussion itself, the program created tangible connections between people who rarely share the same space — students meeting field practitioners, researchers engaging with entrepreneurs, and young professionals building relationships with established figures in Somalia’s environmental and marine sectors. These networks are themselves a form of institutional infrastructure that Somalia’s environmental community currently lacks.
The first of many
For Blue Horn Initiative, the October 2 panel marked the beginning of a sustained program of public engagement — not a standalone event but the opening of a series designed to connect research, advocacy, and action across Somalia’s environmental landscape.
Future programs will address a wider range of environmental and marine topics, with increasing depth, broader participation, and stronger institutional partnerships.
